Bibo is an old robot who follows strict routines that force him to go on living. His existence consists of small, everyday things that give him strength, that let him breathe … Bibo sells ice cream and is committed to his work, mainly because he makes a little girl happy with it.

Bibo’s imaginary life: a story about the human condition

Bibo lives in a lonely, mechanical, and strangely artificial world. He is the only main character in a story that takes place in an imaginary world. Only in the routine of the little things that our little friend does every day can he find motivation and even happiness.

You could say that this square-looking, mechanical and empty figure actually represents many of the dimensions that characterize us. Humanity, a race that (still) stands above machines.

• Sometimes it’s the routines, the habits, the value of the little things that make our universe worth living in and at the same time enable our survival. It is at least a useful lifeline to maintain our strength and dignity.
• Bibo likes simple things: warming his feet in front of the stove, rocking himself in a rocking chair, and inhaling sadness while exhaling nostalgia. He represents us humans in a time when we have ceased to exist as such.

Illuminated worlds and the importance of the little things

We all have our illusions, our inner worlds, which are sometimes the only way to find the strength to get up in the morning. This feeling should be regular, no one should just live by their defenses, dreams and false illusions.

The makers of this award-winning short film are Anton Chistiakov and Mikhail Dmitriev. What they wanted to convey in this delicate, symbolic and above all moving short film, according to their own statement, was a simple reflection on the human cycle.

• For a certain period of time we have a role in society, just like Bibo used to sell ice cream.
• Later comes the time when everything changes and we are forced to live only on the best memories of the past. We take refuge in this defensive mechanism where the value of the little things brings us back to yesterday’s emotions that become the authentic pillars that give us life.
• In this short film, humans are only present in the form of a tin robot, which, it seems, embodies the final impulses of our own race : melancholy, memory, sadness and this immense affection for loved ones that drives us to do the impossible … even to create an imaginary world that no longer exists.
