To analyze the relationship between positive emotions and exercise , the research team evaluated the data from more than half a million people who were interviewed in the course of 23 studies that have linked happiness and exercise since 1980. The participants in the various studies could be assigned to a broad spectrum of socio-economic and ethnic groups.

It could be shown that – in a comparison of sedentary and slightly active people – life satisfaction was already significantly improved by a single training unit per week or ten minutes of sport per day.

It was also noted that a person who exercised an hour and forty minutes a week was 20% more likely to be happy. This percentage continues to increase as more sport is practiced. For people who exercise two or three hours a week, the increase is 29%, and for those who exercise more than three hours a week, even 52%.

When we extrapolate these numbers, we come to an interesting conclusion: 10 minutes of exercise a day actually makes you happier. But to achieve a lasting effect, you have to stay tuned.

The authors of the study, led by Professor Weiyun Chen, were surprised by the data obtained. In just ten minutes a day, an opportunity can be created to feel happier! As we can see from what Chen said when the study was published in The Journal of Happiness   , people who exercise, even if little and moderate, clearly tend to be happier than those who do not exercise .

However, in order to explain this link between happiness and physical activity, several factors must be taken into account. The authors consider the well-being that a healthy body and the social interactions during exercise produce to be among the most important. Exercise also helps you feel more capable, which in turn improves self-esteem and self-image. So cognitive mechanisms also play a role when it comes to the benefits of exercise.
