The Psychologist – What Is His Job?

The psychologist - what is actually his job?

Over the years there has been much speculation about the work of the psychologist and many stereotypes have been imposed on him. He is said to be an expert treating “madmen”, or even some kind of shaman or fortune teller. But a psychologist has nothing to do with magical skills, 3-minute analyzes or visions of the future.

Even if his work is still questioned and looked at uncertainly these days and most of the people do not even know exactly what he is doing, this can be summed up briefly and concisely: The profession of psychologist is preceded by university studies and he spends part of his life trying to understand people’s psyche, feelings and behavior.

In order to better understand his function, his work and the associated efforts, I would like to show you a metaphorical short film about the work of the psychologist at the end of this article.

Seeing a psychologist is the first step in making a change

Turning to a psychologist in certain situations is certainly not easy. Because this step means acceptance, means admitting to yourself that there is a problem or a difficulty, and for many people this realization is not an easy task. Nevertheless, it is the beginning of a liberated emotional world and a changed life.

The first step doesn’t get you where you want to go, but it does detach you from where you are right now.

The work of the psychologist

We can also seek the advice of a psychologist to improve our lives or to grow personally, and not just when a large dark thundercloud is hanging over us, obscuring our view of a fulfilled life. In any case , we must be ready to ask for help when we turn to a psychologist. When we get to that point, we can start working on the change.

The work of psychologists

Asking a psychologist for help can create fear and uncertainty, especially if we are guided by prejudices and stereotypes that society exemplifies. However, as explained at the beginning of the article, a psychologist is by no means a fortune teller or someone who only treats “crazy people”.

A psychologist is a qualified expert in the field of help. He helps us change or improve any area of our life.

A psychologist will not hold magic formulas for you, nor can they make miracles happen in your life. He does not solve the problem either, but he is your support so that you can be the one who can solve it yourself. A psychologist will help you find the resources you need, which in most cases are hidden inside you. But sometimes it is also about learning certain skills in order to bring about this change.

A psychologist listens to you and at a certain moment may even tell you something that you hadn’t thought of before, although you already knew it. Because a psychologist listens carefully to your words and unspoken thoughts by translating your verbal language and gestures. Every now and then he will translate these messages for you so you can start connecting with yourself. To visit a psychologist means to find yourself, to take the work into your own hands with your own most intense and at the same time most beautiful world of emotions.

A psychologist will work to understand your idea of life and find out which aspects would be beneficial to you and which would not, in order to help you overcome challenges and seek alternatives. A psychologist wants to convey this so that you can then apply it to yourself in your everyday life.

Psychologists also have problems

A psychologist will help you understand what is happening to you and what would be the best solution to your problem. But above all, he wants you to be the one to figure it out and learn to deal with it. It helps you make decisions and perceive other realities that may not have existed for you until then because your problem was accepting the circumstances.

A psychologist will equip you with the tools you need and explain how to use them so that you can use them later when the time demands it. You yourself let them become the support and weapons of your personal growth.

Psychologists can also have problems

As we can see later in the short film, a psychologist will help you fix your problems. But that does not mean that he does not have to deal with difficulties and conflicts himself. Psychologists are only people who have to face life and strokes of fate. For this reason, they too may need expert help. Psychologists are people like anyone else and are vulnerable to circumstances.

In the field of psychology it is also very advisable that psychologists seek therapy so that they can work on their conflicts and these do not affect the relationship with their patients. Working on yourself is a fundamental condition of being able to work with people.

Ultimately, you should become aware that a psychologist can guide you on your life path, but only you yourself, with a lot of work and resilience, can aim for a change in your life, pursue his strategies and implement them. Because you alone determine your path, and a psychologist is only a companion.

Finally, I would like to introduce you to this short film that fits our topic. I hope you like him:
